At least for companies looking for industrial sites in Northeast Mississippi.
Deborah Cameron, an economic development specialist with TVA, told a group at the Pontotoc Chamber of Commerce today that site selection consultants and companies are using the Internet to scout out communities.
Take a look at this:
• 85 percent of site selection searches begin on the Internet. Cameron said Severcorr, the new steel company in Columbus, came to the birthplace of Tennessee Williams, because another place fell through and the searcher saw Columbus on the Web late one night.
• 46 percent familiarize themselves with various locations through the Internet. What would your neighborhood’s Web site say? Here are a few: Tupelo, New Albany and Aberdeen.
• 62 percent gather preliminary location data through the ‘Net. Take a local look: Tenn-Tom Waterway
• 54 percent find contact names of economic development staff from Web sites. Here are some: Community Development Foundation
We’ve come a long way from chat rooms and Commodore 64s.
